He became familiar with music since childhood and started to play the piano at 12. He was invited to play for the Kermanshah Radio station in 1978 and started to play the piano for the Radio Orchestra. In 1988 he was invited to work for Tehran Radio and Television Organisation and besides playing the piano and becoming familiar with other musical instruments, he started to play the Daf.

He has been in cooperation with Tehran Symphonic Orchestra and the Radio and Television Symphonic Orchestra and has taken part in several international festivals around the world.

He has also been playing with different musical groups and bands such as Sabba, Navva, Ahref, and Bedel and has performed in many concerts in Europe, Asia and North America. At the moment he is leading the Dallahoo Daf Players Group.

Through hard work and a lot of endeavours, based on scientific and artistic bases, he has developed his own unique and modern method for playing the daf. The way the musical notations are written is also a completely modern method.

In addition to these, Masood Habibi has also changed and developed the structure of the daf and produced a daf with an artificial skin, similar to the skin used in making side drums and timpanis. This new daf which is very suitable for orchestral performances doesn’t have the disadvantages of the natural skinned dafs of the classic daf such as the change of tone and note due to different weather conditions and humidity and can also be made and used at desirable tunes.

There are more than 30 pieces of music for films and more than 150 audio pieces in which he has played in either as a soloist or ensemble. He has also written a number of books on his Modern Method for Playing The Daf, of which the first, second and third volumes are available at the moment.

(كرمانشاه - 1340)

    وي از دوران كودكي‏ با موسيقي انس گرفت و 12 ساله بود كه به فراگيري پيانو پرداخت. در سال 1357 به راديو كرمانشاه دعوت شد و در اركستر موسيقي راديو به نواختن پيانو پرداخت. در سال 1367 به همكاري صدا و سيماي تهران دعوت شد و در كنار نوازندگي پيانو ضمن آشنايي با ديگر سازها، به دف نوازي روي آورد. وي با اركستر سمفونيك تهران و اركستر سمفونيك صدا و سيما همكاري داشته و در چندين كنسرت و فستيوال جهاني شركت كرده است. با گروه‌هاي صبا، نوا، عارف، بيدل و گروه شيدا همكاري داشته و كنسرت‌هاي متعددي در اروپا، آسيا و كانادا اجرا كرده است و هم اكنون سرپرستي گروه دالاهو را به عهده دارد. وي با تلاش فراوان و با تلفيق اصول علمي و هنري در نواختن ساز دف شيوه‌ي نويني را براي دف نوازي ارايه كرده است. شيوه‌ي نت نويسي اين مجموعه براي اين ساز شيوه‌اي كاملاً جديد است.

    مسعود حبيبي علاوه بر اين نوآوري‌ها، ساختمان ساز دف را تكامل بخشيده، كه اين دف داراي پوستي از جنس پوسته‌ي سازهاي «سايد درام» و شيميايي مي‌باشد. اين نوع دف كه براي نوازندگان اركستر بسيار مناسب است، فاقد مشكل تغيير طنين بر اثر تغيير رطوبت و دماي هواي محيط مي‌باشد و بر اساس كوك‌هاي مختلف تهيه و استفاده مي‌گردد.

    از فعاليت‌هاي هنري وي به صورت تكنوازي و گروه‌نوازي مي‌توان به بيش از سي موسيقي متن فيلم و بالغ بر يكصدو پنجاه اثر صوتي اشاره نمود و از آثار منتشر شده ايشان مي‌توان كتاب شيوه‌ي نوين دف نوازي يك و دو و سه را نام برد كه تا كنون جلدهاي اول و دوم آن چاپ گرديده‌اند (انتشارات چنگ). چاپ جدید جلد های يك و دو كتاب شيوه‌ي نوين دف نوازي استاد حبيبي با ترجمه زبان انگلیسی اکنون در دسترس شما می باشد.
